E A Bowles Society Archive
The Society maintains an extensive and evolving archive relating to E A Bowles and his house and garden, the Bowles family history and the local area of Bulls Cross and Forty Hill, Enfield.
It includes documents, correspondence and photographs many of which were gathered by local author Bryan Hewitt whilst researching his book 'The Crocus King' and donated to the Society after its publication. There are also written and recorded interviews with people who knew Mr Bowles or were connected with him either through horticulture nationally and internationally, or his interests in the local community.
A number of original items owned by Mr Bowles still survive including his ice skates used on the New River in the garden and also a pith helmet he took on plant hunting trips abroad. An oil lamp (left) originally from Myddelton House has recently been donated by the daughter of one of Mr Bowles' friends.
The archive is indexed and available to members to view and for research, and to non-members by application to the Society.
